Grading as at 1999, the house was upgraded from E to DPeriod : FederationThe house at 171 Abbotsford Street is a single-storey, double fronted residence of rendered masonry construction with a ruled ashlar finish and a transverse gabled roof clad in corrugated galvanised steel. There are two chimney stacks, which are rendered with moulded caps. The eaves have decorative paired brackets, between which are cement rendered paterae. The symmetrical facade has timber-framed double-hung sash windows flanking the central entrance. A corrugated galvanised steel roofed verandah extends across the facade, terminating at wing walls embellished with vermiculated console brackets. The verandah has been altered by the removal of the original posts and cast iron decoration, and the construction of a low concrete block balustrade. The original front fence has been replaced by a low cream brick and concrete block fence.The house is unusual for its retardadaire Italianate style, displaying characteristics typical of the late nineteenth century. Other than for the verandah, the house is relatively intact retaining its original fenestration, decorative eaves and chimneys.
