RESEARCH ADDED BY GRAEME BUTLER 2024:__________________________________________________DATE: 1937;ASSOCIATIONS: Catholic Church;DESIGNER: San Miguel, Lionel D.;BUILDER: Burne, W C & Son___________________________GRAEME BUTLER 1985 MELBOURNE CENTRAL ACTIVITIES DISTRICT CONSERVATION STUDYStatement of SignificanceHistoryThe `Catholic Advocate', was founded in 1868, contemporary with other notable new publications such as the `Weekly Times' and the forerunner of `Australasian Post'. The Roman Catholic Trusts Corporation provided another commission for architect, Lionel D. San Miguel, (see 111-125 A'Beckett Street) to create new premises for its weekly nearly 70 years later, departing from such previous premises as Massina & Co's printing offices in Howey Place. W.C. Burne and Son of Richmond obtained a permit to build in August 1936.DescriptionNot streamlined like 111-125 A'Beckett Street, this design by comparison has no continuous retail windows and is of a typically workman-like character, akin to its light industrial use. Nevertheless, the patterned brick facing, symmetrical composition, strong horizontality, and large hopper-sash metal-framed windows are all valuable attributes of the Moderne and a stepped parapet away from the undecorated Modern. Bold metal letters pinned to a band of streamlines on the parapet, offer the elegant alternative to the current acrylic fare on Brent's Sales and Service Centre further west (see 111-125 A'Beckett Street).External IntegrityAir units and new signs have been added.StreetscapeSited near similarly 20th Century examples but relates directly only to 111-125, 185-7 and 235-249 A'Beckett Street.SignificanceThe Moderne style successfully applied to light industry with little loss of the style's hallmarks. The integrity of the example is high and it has been for almost 50 years the producer of probably Victoria's most influential ecclesiastical weekly.___________________________GRAEME BUTLER 1985 MELBOURNE CENTRAL ACTIVITIES DISTRICT CONSERVATION STUDYBUILDING IDENTIFICATION FORM cites source 81, page 77;___________________________GRAEME BUTLER 1985 MELBOURNE CENTRAL ACTIVITIES DISTRICT CONSERVATION STUDYBuilding Citations, 1985:7___________________________NEWSPAPERS (TROVE)The Herald (Melbourne, Vic. : 1861 - 1954) Wed 5 Aug 1936 Page 7 CATHOLIC CHURCH PLANS BIG BUILDING MOVEShttps://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/244763417`The building of a new monastery in connection with St. Francis's Church, atthe corner of Elizabeth and Lonsdale Streets, is also to be begun in the nearfuture. This will occupy portion of the site upon which tlie Advocate newspaperbuilding now stands.
