Melbourne Sample Rooms), the Tompkins Brothers, to provide them with a similar establishment. Their builder was John Carter, of Armadale.333 remained nameless in its early years, gaining its identity from its owner and ground-level occupant, Doery Tilley & Co. Upstairs, each floor housed generally one company. L. & E. Marks, Pty. Ltd., hosiery importers, on the first, Richard Searle & Co. on the second (importer of Eastern goods), L. B. Barstow, a manufacturer's agent, Horace Jones & Co., on the fourth, and Massey, Pty. Ltd., mantle and costume makers. This occupancy pattern and some of the occupants had not changed by 1940. Twenty years later its name was Kumfit House and its original tenants all gone. However, recent tenants (saddlery) continue some ambience of the originalowner.DescriptionHampered by a narrower frontage, this building did not possess the three-bay composition of Tompkin's earlier design to the east. Instead, the upper level was pilastraded, forming window strips, and the base level was asymmetrical, with emphasis placed on the entrance by use of a bracketed hood and bold rustication. Stylized pilaster capitals, at the parapet cornice, provide the details which distinguish this from other pilastraded Edwardian warehouses.External IntegrityGenerally original, signs added.StreetscapeContributes to a notable Edwardian warehouse streetscape.SignificanceA near complete Edwardian warehouse, which is distinguished by its detailing and a long owner occupancy byone firm (Doery Tilley & Co)..GRAEME BUTLER 1985 MELBOURNE CENTRAL ACTIVITIES DISTRICT CONSERVATION STUDYBUILDING IDENTIFICATION FORM cites REID, KEITH & JOHN R, 1976, MELBOURNE CBD STUDY AREA 7; CITY OF MELBOURNE BUILDING PERMIT APPLICATIONS 3266.REID, KEITH & JOHN R, 1976, MELBOURNE CBD STUDY AREA 7: 187-Built 1912 replacing a brick store and sheds, 5 storey store with basement, retention of facade important'.LEWIS, M- AUSTRALIAN ARCHITECTURE INDEX:Record 76511 Tompkins, H W & F B; Doery & Tilley Melbourne VIC Warehouses Carter, John - Armadale 1912 03 27 3266-MCC registration no 3266 [Burchett Index].
