GRAEME BUTLER 1983, CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNEGrading as at 1985 : CGrantee P. Hayes, 1B54Period : Early Victorian (1868).History- Built in 1868 for a Hotham greengrocer Charles Fielder, this house remained his property for nearly thirty years, in which time it was leased to such folk as Joseph Savill, a fellmonger; John Brown, moulder; Charles Battis a mason and Eva Allison, no doubt a member of the undertaking family of Joseph Allison.Description- A narrow-frontage, transverse gabled, two-storey weatherboarded house with two windows and a door, built on the street alignment. A face-brick chimney is attached on the south.Integrity - The front wall has been asbestos clad and the lower window altered (see upper).Streetscape- Part of a row of small, narrow fronted cottages of the 1850-60s, confined in a narrow street.Significance- Architecturally, a representative, if altered example, of an early timber house type and evocative of the lack of Building Act jurisdiction in North Melbourne by its two-storey row house form, also set in an equally early streetscape: of regional interest. Historically, illustrates North Melbourne's special role in early Melbourne town as an area for cheap housing: of regional interest.Recommendationsrestore weatherboards, as side-walls to front;repaint in original or typical colours;consider zoning provisions to maintain form and use.References:(RB= Rate book; D= Melbourne or Victoria Directory)1.
