General notes:
Period: EdwardianConstruction date: c1912History:The houses at 24-26 Kensington Road were constructed c.1912. They are first listed in the Sands & McDougall directory in 1913, when they were occupied by John McCarthy and Ernest L Spencer respectively, both of whom were still in residence in 1920..Description:The houses at 24-26 Kensington Road are a semi-detached pair of red brick Edwardian cottages with gabled roofs. Each house has a verandah with turned timber posts and cast iron lacework friezes and gable ends embellished with timber fretwork. Windows are paired double-hung sashes, and the side entrances are recessed. A rendered string course at sill level extends across the facade. The timber picket and brick front fences are not original..Significance:The houses at 24-26 Kensington Road, Kensington, are of local historical and aesthetic interest. The houses are an example of the small cottages which were constructed in large numbers in this part of Kensington in the 1910s, and are of note for their brick construction, unusual in the area in that period. The pair is a contributory element in a largely intact streetscape.
