First created in 1842 as a 21-foot frontage to Lonsdale Street, it passed eventually to James Miller, whose estate was wound up in 1874.9 Mrs. Miller sold to Mrs. Mary Ridley, but not before a timber house on the site was replaced with two brick shops, (then numbers 150-152).1Builder, William Rogers, sought to build here early in 1885, using Evans & Birtwhistle's design. Their project was described as 'two three-storey shops and dwellings,2 but the early rate descriptions have five rooms for each and Mahlstedt's 1887 plan shows two-storeys.3 The pair united by c1905, later varying from use as a warehouse to that of offices.4Mary Ridley's Trust carried through until the mid·1930s. Lionel and Perry Boyce owned it during the late 1940s and 1950s. Early in that period it was used as George Dougharty's tailor shop and Miss Kennedy's dressmaking salon, later as a wine shop/cafe it was run by Mrs. Quintrell, Thomas Hunt and J. Theodore, up until the 1920s. From the Amusement Machine Co. of the 1930s to the Atlas Scale and Machine Co. (also amusement machines) of the 1950s, its use became of a warehouse/workshop one, although today's tenancies (florist, cafe) have returned to early uses. The facade was modernized in 1946. 5.DescriptionLittle survives externally from the 1880s on the Lonsdale Street elevation, the two having been extensively renovated in the 194Os, prior to the Amusement Machine occupation. However, at the rear of 147 (facing Corr's Lane) the two-storey stable (now a Japanese restaurant) is still evocative of this period. (This lot was separated from the 14S-7 site in 1848 and maybe earlier than the shops, but MMBW and Mahlstedt's plans show it as connected).Shop fronts arc sympathetic to the earlier period given the raised plinths.External IntegrityRelatively intact to the 1946 renovation period in Lonsdale Street and similarly to the 18805 facing Corr's Lane, but with a new ground-level doorway and window, and bagged and painted finish to bricks.StreetscapeMatches the scale of adjoining Lonsdale Street sites, but little else. The stable closes the view down Corr's Lane.SignificanceA wine cafe for the longest period of anyone use in its history, and the rear stable and loft continue in this use (restaurant) while the Lonsdale Street elevations are a mixture of periods and otherwise unrelated to any of the precinct's major historical themes. The stable (Corr's Lane) is significant as one of the few evident in the CAD (the only one?) and as a terminating streetscape element at the end of the lane.28 Corrs Lane contributes to precinct.GRAEME BUTLER 1985 MELBOURNE CENTRAL ACTIVITIES DISTRICT CONSERVATION STUDYBuilding Identification Form.GRAEME BUTLER 1989, LITTLE BOURKE STREET PRECINCT CONSERVATION STUDYV3: 33 cites permit applications, rate books.LEWIS, M- AUSTRALIAN ARCHITECTURE INDEX76317 Evans & Birtwhistle - 22 Collins St east; Miller, Mrs Melbourne VIC Houses; Shops Rogers, William - 28 Barry St Sth Yarra 1885 01 5 1252, MCC registration no 1252 [Burchett Index].
