General notes:
Grading as at 1985 : DPeriod : InterwarGrantee : S Craig 1852William J. Cross and Co. had operated their hay and corn business off Errol Street, in Cross Place (now 51-53 Errol Street) since the 1860s. First building small wooden shops next to his corn store in Cross Place, Cross commenced this shop row in 1870: his first tenant being James Watt (later Watt Brothers) grocer (47-9), Cross temporarily occupying 43-5 as his store, and 41 in the custody of butcher, Thomas Chapman. Of later lessees, Richard Catt (qv), the furniture dealer (43-5) and Elizabeth and Richard Vine, confectioners, at 47-9, were all of long tenure.Drapers James and Edward Fitzgerald were perhaps the longest tenants of further shops and residences at 55-57 Errol Street on the northern corner of Cross Place, commenced by Cross 1875-1880 and completed by 1885. Meanwhile by 1889-1890, Cross had replaced the wooden houses of Errol Street, possibly by one of the above shops facing Errol Street and his wooden store was all that remained which he lased to Frank Herbert cabman. This was rebuilt in brick by 1895. Moran and Cato, and Edward Tootell, bootmaker, were other tenants.By the appearance of 51-53, it may have replaced Cross Place by c1915-1920, but given the continuation of the iron verandah, this may have been a renovation of earlier premises, and/or appears to have been carried out by the same owners. A drawing of the late 1900s (sic) shows a building at 51-53 but also shows the Fitzgerald Brothers at 41-49 Errol. The streetscape has seven shops and residences of two-storeys, stuccoed brick and possessing iron Corporation pattern street verandahs. They are parapetted, possessing typically severe gabled entablatures, with minute scrolls, above the cornice mould: equally small acroteria top each gable. Tripartite window grouping precurses the commercial style so dominant in Victoria Street, West Melbourne and the quoining subtly divides the tenancies. Only 41, 55-7 have what might have been original ingo-shop fronts. Between 41-9 (5) and 55-7 (2), is the c1920 (51-3) stepped parapet, stuccoed brick substitution for Cross Place: the shop fronts of this are c1935-40. Notable features include intact shop front, post supported shop verandah. Retained on new/renovated shop (retain for streetscape); may post-date renovation but unlikely.
