General notes:
Period: EdwardianConstruction date: c1911History:The house at 2-4 Kensington Road was constructed c.1911-12. The Sands & McDougall directory up to 1911 lists a property occupied by various members of the Wight family, including a solicitor and an architect, and known as The Ridge. This is probably the same house, a large brick villa on an extensive site, shown on the MMBW map of 1895. In 1911, the Sands & McDougall directory list The Ridge as 'vacant', and in 1912, John Smith is shown as the occupant of house later listed as 2 Kensington Road..Description:The house at 2-4 Kensington Road is a single-storey block-fronted Edwardian villa with a steeply pitched hipped and gabled roof. L-shaped in plan, the house has a projecting gabled bay with three timber-framed casements with highlights. The gable end is half-timbered with roughcast render infill. The entry door has side and fanlight. Alterations include the replacement of the original verandah, the recladding of the roof in concrete tiles and the construction of a low, cream brick front fence..Significance:The house at 2-4 Kensington Road, Kensington, is of local historical and aesthetic interest. The house is representative of the development in the area in the early twentieth century. Aesthetically, the house is an intact example of the Edwardian timber villas which were constructed in this part of Kensington in the 1910s. The house is a contributory element in a largely intact streetscape.
