Of special interest is the system of the K-M Concrete Steel' Company Pty. Ltd.The K-M Company, which supplies complete steel reinforcements tor concrete structures of every description, occupies commodious offices in the National Mutual Buildings, corner of Collins and Queen streets. Melbourne.AUSTRALIAN INVENTIONThe company was formed to place on the market an Australian invention; which has been a success. The patent rights of the company, which Have boon taken out in all the principal countries of the world, embody the locking together' of numerous pieces of steel (consisting of. tension and shear members), so that the lot may be handled as a single unit. . Those have been placed on the market; for beams and lintels, as. K-M units; and for floors and slabs as K-M mesh, which, it is stated, command a ready and Increasing sale.As an example of what can be done by the K-M method, a beam reinforcement, consisting. of 10 tension members 32ft. long, and more, than 350 stirrups or shear members, was landed on the job at Michael's Building, at the corner of Elizabeth and Lonsdale streets, as a single unit, ready to place and pour the concrete. In this case every shear member was, It Is stated; securely and accurately fixed in strict accordance with the details of the architects (Messrs Beaver and Purnell). The whole of the reinforcements for this building were supplied by the K-M Company. JOHN'S TO BE PULLED DOWNNew Church Will be BuiltFor £35,000 the Anglican Church authorities, have sold portion of St. John's Church land, fronting Elizabeth street, to Messrs. Connibere Bros., members of the Arm of Connibere, Grieve, and Connibere, the well-known city- merchants. The sale marks the end of one of the most historic churches of Melbourne, which is to be dismantled.A new church will be erected , on land at the rear. The land which has been sold has a frontage of 210 feet by a depth of 100 feet. The frontage Is occupied by a terrace of small shops, which are to be pulled down, as it is understood that Messrs. Connibere Bros. intend to erect a line block of shops in continuation of the block, including the premises of Messrs. Harrison, San (Miguel Proprietary Ltd)., which Is owned by the church.St John's Church was opened on July 2, 1854, and is enshrined in the memory of pioneers. It stands on portion of the block which has been sold. The diocesan authorities Intend -to erect the new church and a new Metropolitan Mission on a site at the rear of that acquired by Messrs. Connibere Bros. It has a frontage of 330 feet by 133 feet, and represents about half of the original .grant of two acres belonging to St. John's Church.The cost of the new church and mission house is estimated at £40,000. This work represents a scheme to establish the Mission of St. James and St, John, and means marked progress In Anglican Mission work among the poorer parts of the city.The proposal to dismantle St, John's Church , recalls to mind some well known clergymen who have been associated with It. These Include the Rev. James Darling, the first incumbent, who arrived in Victoria with Sir Charles Hotham, the Governor; the Rev. John Barlow, the Rev. ... L, Chase, and In later times, the Rev. Cadwaladr P. Thomas, who is still in Melbourne.
