Grading as at 1985 : CPeriod : Victorian (1890)Grantee : J W Leonard and others 1865GRAEME BUTLER 1983, CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNEHistory – By 1872, the Bible Christian Church had purchased part of CA3/85 and erected a chapel, presumably to the design of A.E. Duguid. 1 The Rev. Duncan Teague was an early and perhaps the first resident pastor and it appears that, during his time, the present church was constructed in 1890, to the design of T.L. Powell, as was the manse at 445 Dryburgh Street (qv), during 1888-9. Later pastors included the Revs. H.E. Secombe and Richard Harren. The sect merged with the Wesleyans in 1905, causing the sale and demolition of the old Wesleyan Chapel where 50-5 Brougham Street is today; similarly the first timber Wesleyan school was shifted from Howard Street to this site. 3Description - An apron-fronted, gabled polychrome brick church in the Italian Gothic manner, with striped surrounds to openings below stucco hood-moulds and buttresses, with gablets at the corners and entrance bay. An eight-light foiled wheel window is set within the `apron’ which marks the entrance: beneath double pointed arches set on an implied colonade.Integrity - The entrance doors have been replaced and possibly a cross once topped the gable; brick planters/fence have replaced the former presumed timber picket fence. 4Streetscape - Acceptably atypical to its residential surroundings but relating to the larger and dominating St. Michael’s next door (qv); a church group and civic focus of the area.Significance - Architecturally, common Congregational/Wesleyan/~Methodist tripartite facade form (see Howe Crescent, South Melbourne and the early Congregational Church, Castlemaine, 1861-2) which has more developed and earlier examples: of local importance.Historically, an uncommon religious sect of the 19th century which no longer exists; of regional interest.Recommendations - Consider replacing original or typical picket fence (i.e. spade-head); consider replacing original doors (refer NMA Historical Collection); repaint externally visible joinery in typical or original colours; and consider using traditional sign type, lettered as guidelines. -References:(RB= Rate book; D= Melbourne or Victoria Directory)1.
