General notes:
This pair of houses at 53-55 Lothian Street were erected in 1904 on the site of a small brick house that was built in 1867. Occupied by its original tenant for twenty years, this earlier house had been demolished by 1900, when the site was rated as a 32' by 60' vacant lot, valued at 7 pounds and owned by Thomas Patterson. In 1904, this land was acquired by Ann Davis, who was erecting an 'unfinished' six-room brick house, valued at 26 pounds. The following year, the site was rated as pair of five-room brick housesThey comprise a pair of double-storey Victorian Survival residences of brick construction with a common corrugated galvanised steel roof. The houses have verandahs, with corrugated galvanised steel roofs, extending between wing walls. Each of the facades have a panelled timber entry door and a timber-framed double-hung sash window at ground level, and a single timber-framed double-hung sash window at first floor level. The chimneys are of red brick with a corbelled capping. The chimney to No. 53 has been painted. They are of local aesthetic interest. Erected in 1904, they are an example of the so-called 'Victorian Survival' style, a relatively late use of the previous building style. As a pair, the houses are an important element in a largely Victorian streetscape.
