BOURKE HILL PRECINCT HERITAGE REVIEWcontributory to Bourke Hill PrecinctHISTORYOriginally constructed as a two storey factory building in Juliet Terrace pre 1888, the building was in use as a Tyre Factory by 1921. It is probable that the third storey was added to the building and the façade remodeled around this time. The predominate use of this building has been as a manufacturing premises.FEATURESThree storey brick building with a hipped roof concealed by a parapet. Interesting brick dental detail on the stringcourse. The steel framed windows and solid render lintels are Interwar in character, and there is evidence of brick infill across the facade using original/early bricks.ANALYSISThe building is an early building of interest, remaining in a highly altered streetscape. It is one of the only remaining links to Liverpool Street, a highly utilized manufacturing strip in the CBD and architecturally it is understandable as an early factory building. It makes a notable contribution to the streetscapeAppendix 2 - Sands McDougall Commercial General Directories 1868-1970.LEWIS, M- AUSTRALIAN ARCHITECTURE INDEX:Record 73338 Kursteiner, A C F; Raphael, Henry Melbourne VIC Houses; Shops Raphael, Henry 1890 07 23 4574-MCC registration no 4574 [Burchett Index].
