ASSOCIATED RESEARCH ADDED BY GRAEME BUTLER:DATE: 1898, 1930 renovation;ASSOCIATIONS: McIntyre Bros - tea merchants and Ackmans Ltd.DESIGNERS: Stapley, Frank 1898; Gawler and Drummond with Mr A. H. Beckwlth.GRAEME BUTLER 1985 MELBOURNE CENTRAL ACTIVITIES DISTRICT CONSERVATION STUDYStatement of Significance (part)DescriptionA five-storey reinforced concrete and stuccoed commercial elevation, which takes on the general neo-Grec characteristics of its Period, but has other stylistic attributed which include Jacobean approach to fenestration and detail. The main facade element is framed with piers which extend from a cornice parapet down to just below the second floor level, where prismatic shaped brackets support the string mould and its entablature at that point. Between, the fenestration extends as a vertical strip, divided by panelled spandrels and in a Tudoresque or Jacobean pattern, where casements and top lights are combined. At the top storey, however, the openings are arched with exaggerated keystones and deep bar relief foliation in the spandrels. Above that again, a more geometric ornamentation takes over, suggesting the neo-Grec manner.External IntegrityThe first floor level has been altered and is possibly a remnant from an earlier building,(three arched openings). The ground level and street canopy are replacements or recladding of the original.StreetscapeMatches in scale and fenestration and some Period detail to the impressive Angus & Robertson and Paton Buildings next door and relates closely to the London Hotel and its annexe to the south..LEWIS, M- AUSTRALIAN ARCHITECTURE INDEXRecord 75195 Stapley, Frank; McIntyre Bros - tea merchants Melbourne VIC Warehouses McConnell & McIntosh - Leveson St Nth Melb 1898 03 26 7152.CITY OF MELBOURNE BUILDING PERMIT APPLICATIONSIndexhttps://www.ancestry.com.au/imageviewer/collections/60672/images/44777_349573-00086no major works 1916- cites café and restaurant, shopfronts1930 construction of lift enclosure and shopfront1938 series of small alts see 19203, 195831979 general internal alts, shopfront.NEWSPAPERS (TROVE)1897 fire- https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/9780236.The Argus (Melbourne, Vic. : 1848 - 1957)Thursday 27 October 1898 - Page 7https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/9857669MESSRS.
