General notes:
Period: EdwardianConstruction date: pre-1917History:The house at 49 Westbourne Road was constructed prior to 1917. It is one of a number of houses on the south side of Westbourne Road constructed in the period 1910-1916 for which the Sands & McDougall directory is unclear with regard to their occupants. The directory lists T McInerney, a carrier, and Richard Fahey as the occupants of No. 49 in 1915, however, in 1916, Ernest T McGee is listed as the occupant and McInerney and Fahey are listed as living at No. 51. McGee remained at No. 47 until at least 1920..Description:The house at 49 Westbourne Road is a single-storey block-fronted Edwardian cottage with a hipped corrugated galvanised steel roof with bracketed eaves and raised on a high plinth. A small verandah extends across the facade, considerably altered by the replacement of the original posts with steel columns, the removal of the frieze decoration and the addition of a concrete stair. The entrance door is six-panelled with a fanlight; the original windows have been replaced. The low, orange brick front fence is not original..Significance:The house at 49 Westbourne Road, Kensington, is of local historical and aesthetic interest. The house is an example of the type of small timber Edwardian cottages which were constructed in large numbers in this part of Kensington in the 1910s. The house is a contributory element in a largely intact streetscape.
