General notes:
Grading as at 1985 : BPeriod : Early Victorian (1863)Grantee : T Glaister & Co 1859Charles Clayton who had the hotel built in 1863-4, was a long-standing owner and publican. In the later part of his stay, the hotel was enlarged from a nine room establishment to fourteen rooms in 1885, when it had been sold to G.A. Terry. For the next 10 years at least, he owned the hotel and James Clegg, the publican from 1885, was still there in 1900. G.A. Terry was involved in property and development as the secretary of the North Melbourne and Carlton Permanent Third and Fourth Termination Building Societies.A two-level tuck-pointed face brick hotel with a corniced and balustraded parapet, string-moulds and rosette friezes, window architraves and flat pediments to the lower openings. An added stucco dado encircles the ground level and a Grecian style Victoria's head medallion appears on the upper splayed corner façade. This hotel is similarly fenestrated and ornamented to the former Rose of Hotham hotel at 683 Queensberry Street (1861-2), although it is possible that the orbs and parapet balustrading were added during one of the improvements.Architecturally, evocative of its use and construction date in form and general ornament, with added ornament in the stylistic context of the original, of a competent if common design, not greatly altered, and prominently sited in a 19th century streetscape: of regional importance. Historically, a social centre of the area and a recognisable form-use-type in a typical location: of local importance.
