General notes:
GRAEME BUTLER 1983,1991 CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNEGrading as at 1991: BPeriod : Early Victorian (1866)Grantee : W Jones 1859.History- Thomas Henderson, who is listed as a labourer in the rate books of the time first owned and occupied this house in 1868. Other owners were Frederick Fewster (1880), William Cooper (1875) and Henry Wickham, a carrier who was living there around 1895.By 1870 Thomas Henderson is listed in directories as an instrument maker. He was also a member of the North Melbourne Council during the 1880s and 90s. [Victorian Municipal Directory 1880, 1886, 1890]Description- A double fronted rockface basalt cottage with a transverse, high gabled and slated roof. Two corniced stone chimneys with terracotta pots occur at either end of the ridge.Integrity - A high timber lathe fence has been built where once a square-top (cut-down?) timber picket fence was: the roof gutters and door have been replaced and the trim colours changed. The plinth appears to have been stuccoed.Streetscape- One of several cottages, some stone, from the 1860's-70's in this part of Dryburgh Street.Architecturally, (similar to No. 155 Dryburgh Street but unpainted) it is a simple cottage built from a material used for a short period in Melbourne's history and possessing, by its roof line and small setback, the characteristic form of an early cottage, of regional importance.Historically, one of a group of early houses owned and occupied by the building trade and other skilled occupations, of regional interest.Recommendations –• Repaint trim in original or typical colours;• replace door as required with four-panel door; investigate removal of stucco and;• relocation of S.E.C.meter box;• use ogee guttering;• consider replacing fence with arrow-head picket fence;• consider zoning provisions to maintain original use and form..References:(RB= Rate book; D= Melbourne or Victoria Directory)1 RB 1868-60, 940; RB 1880-81 ,3150; RB 1875-76, 3065; RB 1895-96, 34192 D. 18703 VMD 1880, 1886, 18904 NMAHC photograph.___________________________Graeme Butler 2025:Further work is required to ensure that the Thomas Henderson of Dryburgh Street is the same one of O'Connell Street and Hotham municipality.
