General notes:
Period: VictorianConstruction date: pre-1883History:The house at 19 Gower Street was built prior to 1883. The rate books for 1883-84 describe the house, which was owned by Edward Cooper and occupied by Robert J McCulloch, a journalist. That year, the house was described as a six-room brick house with a Nett Annual Value of #40 and a population of four people. The Sands & McDougall directories are unclear as to the earlier history of the house, although its style suggests it was constructed in the early 1880s..Description:The houst at 19 Gower Street is a single-storey Victorian villa a brick construction with a hipped slate roof with bracketed eaves. L-shaped in plan, the projecting section has a canted bay window and the adjacent verandah has an ogee profile roof. Windows are timber-framed double-hung sashes, and the chimneys are of bichromatic brickwork with moulded cappings. Alterations include the painting of the bichromatic brickwork and the removal of the verandah frieze decoration. The timber picket fence is recent..Significance:The house at 19 Gower Street, Kensington, is of local aesthetic and historic interest. Historically, the house is a representative of the first phase of development of Kensington. Aesthetically, the house is a reasonably intact example of a Boom period brick villa, a type relatively rare in Kensington. It makes an important contribution to the streetscape.
