Reproduction rights - State Library of VictoriaNewspaper collection, State Library. Four photographs of the Opening Day Ceremony for Miss Sutherland's Orphanage for Neglected Children (Leonard St, Parkville), taken from Weekly Times, 23rd Nov, 1901 p9.Notes: Sepia print. The photographs depict various snapshots of the opening day ceremony. Each photograph is labelled. It's interesting to note that the children are referred to as "inmates" in the top right photograph. Hats were a relative fashion accessory at the time. A white Gainsborough (or Picture hat) can be seen worn by one woman, with a straw sailor's hat being worn by another. Most of the children are also wearing various other long brimmed hats that were the fashion of the time. Long, often ornate, hat pins secured the hat to the wearer's hair to keep it in place. The actual home was originally called Parkville House (Ayr Cottage). Whilst the photograph suggests otherwise, the official name of the home was the Victorian Children's Aid Society Home. It has since been called Swinburne House (1957) and since it's purchase by University of Melbourne in 1966, has been renamed the Hilda Stevenson Building, as part of International House at the University of Melbourne.(Source: https://www.findandconnect.gov.au/ref/vic/biogs/E001067b.htm)(Source: https://www.findingrecords.dhhs.vic.gov.au/collectionresultspage/VictorianNeglectedChildrensAidSociety)(1901, November 23).
