General notes:
Image held by North Melbourne Library. Wallace House.Front façade of Wallace House at 6 Alfred St, North Melbourne. Mid to late Victorian terrace house.Previous owners include Dr Archibald GILCHRIST, the minister of the Union Memorial Presbyterian Church, St Mark's in Curzon Street from 1876 to 1883, whose tenant at WALLACE HOUSE was Samuel Smythe, a tanner reputed to have made the best boot leather in Melbourne, who supplied boot leather for the Imperial Contingent of Australian Bushmen in the Boer War. Dr Gilchrist sold the home to Albert Mattingley who owned and occupied it for years. Mattingley was the 'founder' of the Errol Street State School, which is fitting because the family future of this landmark home is enhanced by educational opportunities.A parapet and a wide chimney adorn the top of the building with cast iron lacework encumbering the first floor balcony. The windows on the first floor are jalousie windows, composed of parallel glass and set in a frame. Corner lattices and lacework can be seen over the front veranda with stained glass windows. A classic federation gate is visible to the left. An unidentified vehicle is parked to the left of the scene, and a VW Beetle (year unknown) is parked on the right.Inscription on reverse of photograph reads "6 Alfred" in blue pen; and the following paragraph, in lead pencil - "See also "An Early History of Nth Melb" by Albert Mattingley -Built 1886-7 Home of Albert Mattingley, son of early settler in Nth Melb. Albert also first5headmaster of Errol St State School. at 54 Shiel St, Nth Melb."
