GRAEME BUTLER 1983, CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNEGrading as at 1985: DPeriod: Edwardian-era (1910)Grantee : J M McDonald 1864History- Anne Braid, then of Dryburgh Street, is given as the first owner of these row houses after their construction in 1910 by J C Morrison of Church Street, Parkville. Alex Braid, who appears to have been Anne's husband, was an engineer and was to finance another row at 500-504 Dryburgh Street in the following year.Description- Single-storey, single-fronted, parapetted brick row houses with iron decoration to the verandahs and fences. Plainly ornamented, they possess segment arched entablatures, scrolls and urns as well as having an unusual cruciform in plan, arched tops to the fence piers. The iron fence is a double palisade with both spear and fleur-de-lis heads.Integrity - Generally original but bricks painted.Streetscape - Contributing part of the Errol Street north residential precinct: terminating the cohesive row of stuccoed houses prior to 250 Errol Street's atypical siting and materials.Significance - Architecturally, a plainly decorated and late example of a common form of row house, but near original and set in a cohesive streetscape: of local importance.Historically, another example of small housing developments by resident of building-allied professions: of local importance.Recommendations –Remove paint from brickwork;repaint in typical or original colours.References:(RB= Rate book; D= Melbourne or Victoria Directory; WD= Wise Post Office Directory; BW = MMBW Property Service file)1.
