GRAEME BUTLER 1983, CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNEGrading 1985, 1991: B (rear house 68 1870), C (main house 66 1879)Allotment: Pt CA25 Section 82Grantee S.G. King, 1865Built 1870-.History - On land purchased from Hotham municipal rate collector, William Poole (qv), carpenter Frederick Henry Lording, built Marian Cottage in 1871. It was described in that year as a five room wooden cottage. (See later notes on King's tenure)Lording had left Hotham by the end of the 1880s; setting up his business in Ferntree Gully where one Alfred Lording was also a storekeeper.Other Lordings, near and in the area, included Henry Lording, an architect living in Kensington: Harry, who was a house agent of Errol Street; and Charles Lording, a Kensington timber merchant: all being associated with house marketing or house construction.Other occupants of Marian Cottage included Charles Gillott, Mrs, Emily Garlard and Lloyd Hooker.Of note, is the nearby former residence of another carpenter, John Nichol (Refer 70 Molesworth Street).Description - An unusual triple gable timber-clad house with one-level subsidiary and recessed side bays and a central and major, attic-storeyed e trance bay. Each gable has carved barges: the central bay possessing a scalloped pattern, with centre finial; and the side bays have·no pierced design s, their presumed finials having gone. The simple fenestration possesses compound moulded architraves, typically double hung-sashes and one double casement sash attic window with what may be original shutters, This attic window is visually 'matched' by roof vents in the side bays.integrity - externally finials have gone from, and openings altered sympathetically, in the side bays.Streetscape - 'axe-handle' siting isolates this house from the street, but it shares the picturesque, gabled timber construction of 70, 64-6 and 72-4 Molesworth Street and occupies an unusual concealed position ,off the street.Significance - Architecturally, perhaps a unique house plan configuration within the State, for its period on a near unique site for the study area; possessing the uncommon carved-barge 'picturesque' gabled form and contribution to a sub precinct of similarly styled timber houses of the 1870s: of high regional significance.References:(RB= Rate book; D= Melbourne or Victoria Directory)1 RB 1871, 1419;2. Given King's importance in the local community and the fame of the architects, this site should be reassessed..GRAEME BUTLER 1983, CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNEBUILDING IDENTIFICATION FORM 1991___________________________ANCESTRY.COMMead family treeSamuel Grey King was born on 22 April 1831 in Barnstaple, Devon, his father, Samuel, was 33 and his mother, Elizabeth, was 29. Mr King founded a large warehouse at North Melbourne, where lie traded under the firm name of S. G. King, and Co., and employed hundreds of hands. He after wards removed to Flinders-lane, where he founded the firm of King, Harcourt and Co., but shortly returned to North Melbourne. Mr. King was deeply interested in all philanthropic and church work, a favorite practice of his being to find openings on the land for young men among his employes who disliked the cramped city lifer Several times Mr. King tried unsuccessfully to' enter the Legislative Council, but his public life- was confined to constant adjudication at the North Melbourne bench as a justice of the peace. After the land boom Mr. King removed to Leongatha and opened a small, business.1910LORDING.-On the 27th July, at "Kingston," Fern Tree Gully, Marianne, the dearly, loved wife of Frederick Henry Lording, aged 77 years.
