General notes:
Grading as at 1985: BPeriod: Victorian c 1882Grantee : J Shearer & Co, 1875Heaton House is a large two storey home, with notable decorated verandah. It has an unusual wedge shaped corner siting. In 1888, John Greenwood, a contractor, built this house in which he then resided for at least the following ten years. Greenwood also owned and built other properties in the area.A two-storey, parapetted stuccoed brick house with a two-level cast-iron verandah which is sited parallel to the frontage, facing the bay, One verandah roof is a bullnose profile whilst the iron is ornate. In contrast, the corniced and parapetted form is typical of earlier buildings in its austerity of ornament : the rectangular parapet entablature, which bears the house name, has a central acroterion with scrolls. Openings are architraved, whilst some possess six-pane sashes.Architecturally, because of its austere and typical form, it achieves importance more so from its unusual siting, original detail and prominent position : of regional importance.Historically, another of the owner-builder developers of Adderley Street and the area generally : in this case, building a large house as a mark of success.
