General notes:
Period: VictorianConstruction date: pre-1884History:The house at 5 Henry Street was constructed prior to 1884. The rate books for 1883-84 show the building as a five-room house owned by Stephen Wallis of Bourke Street, Melbourne, and occupied by Frank Vial, a tanner. The Nett Annual Value was 50 pounds. The rate books for 1881-82 are unclear. Wallis, a hotelkeeper, who also owned vacant land adjacent to the house, owned the house until at least 1886.Description:The building at 5 Henry Street is a single-storey, double-fronted Victorian house constructed of brick (now painted) with a terracotta tiled hipped roof with bracketed eaves. The house has a recent verandah with a corrugated galvanised steel roof, turned timber support posts and cast iron lacework. Double-hung sash windows flank the central entrance door. The timber picket fence is not original, and the cappings have been removed from the rendered chimneys..Significance:The house at 5 Henry Street, Kensington, is of local historical and aesthetic interest. Historically, the house is representative of the architectural development of Kensington in the Victorian period. Aesthetically, the house is a reasonably intact representative of a larger brick villa in the Italianate style which makes a positive contribution to the streetscape.
