Historic Buildings Preservation Council Report on CBD Block No 6 Dec 1977 : 138Dates: c1862, 1872, 18751 HISTORY 556 - 560 FLINDERS STREET1862 First discernible mention in rate book of No. 560 (then known as No. 139, although rather confusingly there was another 139 further along Flinders Street). Occupier was G. Stookes (sic) and owner was N. Fulton. The premises was described as a butcher shop.1866 No. 560 described as brick shop, 5 rooms, and No. 558 as brick shop, one room.·1872 No. 560 described as brick shop, and warehouse, and No. 558 as brick shop, four rooms, two floors.1876 First mention in rate book of No: 556 (then known as No. 141) described as brick bank and four rooms. The occupier was the Bank of N.S.W.. Nos. 558 and 560 are the same as in 1872.1877 Dove plan shows all three buildings as two storeys. From this evidence, it is assumed that No. 560 was constructed C.1862, No. 558 in its final form c.1872, and No. 556, at c.1875.2. DESCRIPTION.Three double storey brick buildings, two of which have a classical cornice and supporting volutes at first floor level, and the third having similar ornamentation over the windows to the upper floor. The three buildings are crowned by a common classical cornice. All of the shop fronts appear to have been altered at a later date. Nos. 556 and 558 were also extended at the rear in a sympathetic manner at a later date. All of the buildings have been considerably modified internally. No architectural nor historical significance is attached to the buildings.3. RECOMMENDATION.The retention of these buildings is not warranted..DOVE, H P. 1876.
