GRAEME BUTLER 1983, CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNEGrading as at 1985 : BPeriod : Mid Victorian (1884)Grantee : J Wylie 1866History- The people who leased James Wylie's 1884 row houses include some important names in the history of North Melbourne, first tenants after the construction of the houses were Percy Jenkins and Samuel Smythe . Other occupiers were James Stevenson, an ironfounder, Robert Young, a draper and Sarah Allison (1895) who no doubt, belonged to the North Melbourne family of undertakers, Joseph Allison.Description- Two storeyed stuccoed brick and parapetted row house pair with a two level cast iron verandah and iron picket fence. Panelled cast iron, segment arched entablatures, scrolls, urns and a bracketted cornice are the main ornament components. Of particular note are the original front garden layouts and plant materials (Lamb's Ears).Integrity- Generally originalStreetscape- Part of a valuable residential streetscape.Significance- Architecturally, an original pair of a common form type, contributing to a valuable streetscape and possessing rare original front gardens, of regional importance.Historically, associated with many of the areas representative personalities, including the original grantee, also a builder, an ironfounder and the ubiquitous Allison family, of local importance..Recommendations -Repaint in typical or original colours;record garden layout and content for restoration data..References:(RB= Rate book; D= Melbourne or Victoria Directory)1.
