General notes:
Period: VictorianConstruction date: pre-1881History:The house at 18 Henry Street was built prior to 1882 on a large site which stretched between Henry Street and Footscray (now Kensington) Road. The rate books for 1881-82 show Frederick J Coote, who also owned a number of cottages elsewhere in Kensington, as the owner and occupier of an eight-room brick house and outbuildings with a Nett Annual Value of #80. The house, which continues to occupy a large site, was described in the 1885-86 rate books as having a 'garden' and a population of nine..Description:The building at 18 Henry Street is a large single-storey Victorian residence on a large site. The walls are of rendered brick, and the hipped roof is clad in slate. The windows are timber-framed double-hung sashes. The house, which may have been built in more than one stage, appears on the 1895 MMBW map as a symmetrical structure with a central west-facing verandah. The house appears to have been externally refurbished in the Edwardian period, with roughcast render applied to the upper walls and the chimneys altered. Further refurbishment has occurred, particularly to the front (west) elevation, in the post-War period. There is a double-storey brick and weatherboard stables building at the south-east corner of the site..Significance:The house at 18 Henry Street, Kensington, is of local historical importance and aesthetic interest. Historically, the house is a relatively rare example in Kensington of a substantial freestanding Victorian villa which retains a large site and early outbuildings. Aesthetically, although altered, the house retains its overall nineteenth century form.
