RESEARCH ADDED BY GRAEME BUTLER 2022:__________________________________________________DATE: 1884-, c1915-20 renovation;ASSOCIATIONS: Hughes, Mrs John H; Taylor, W C; Graham Bros Pty LtdDESIGNER: Hughes, James?;.GRAEME BUTLER 1989, LITTLE BOURKE STREET PRECINCT CONSERVATION STUDYHistoryBuilt: c1887Originally a three-storey building of half the frontage (southern half), it is shown thus on 1887 and c1906 Mahlstedt's plans linked to the rear of 105 Lt. Bourke Street. It was probably built for Mrs. J.H. Hughes in c1885, (possibly to William Barker's design), as part of the contract to erect 105 Little Bourke Street, (q.v.).1 Openings, two windows either side of a door, were also shown in a similar form to the existing configuration, facing Market Lane. Sometime between c1915 and c1925 the frontage changed from 30 feet to 40 feet presumably when Graham Bros. P/L took over as owners.· This was the northern section, probably also encompassing renovations to the existing facade. In the 1950s Anglo-Greek Press P/L or John Papagotopoulas (a long-term tenant) occupied the ground level. Hyman Goldberg the next and Harry & Albert Prout the top level, then a building with a 40 feet frontage. Then the owner was Alice Neville of Camberwell. From around 1940 and earlier, when Graham Bros P/L owned it, Sun Hat & Cap Manufacturing Co. (1st) and Max Xora or the Korn Mantle Manufacturing Co. were tenants (2nd).5Tye Shing, cabinet maker, 6 was a long-term tenant when John Hughes (and by c1915 his executors) owned it back to near 1885, after Hop Hing & Co.7 Prior to that a brick house was on the site. 8DescriptionAn altered three-storey brick former factory with what appears to be near original fenestration (south wing) and parapet detail. A chimney and parapet side-wall sweep are also 19th century elements (south new).External IntegrityNew. stucco, new ground-level tiles, modified openings, applied signs and services.StreetscapeSiting. scale and some finishes concur with the precinct character and the other altered buildings adjoining.SignificanceRecognizable as a 19th century factory and, for a long time, a substantial Chinese cabinetmaking business.Contributes to precinct__________________________________________________NOTES1 BA 9323; RB1885, 2312 RB1915, 114: RB1915, 1613 RB1950, 101f4ibid5 RB1940, 169f; D19396 RB1910,1867 RB1885,2378 RB1882, 2529Dove Plans10 RB1882.1759f; RB1872,.1829f11 RB1890. 168112 Mahlstedt &.
