General notes:
Period: VictorianConstruction date: pre-1881History:The house at 16 Bayswater Road Kensington appears in the 1881-82 rate books as a three-room wooden house valued at #16. The house, together with No. 18, was owned by Samuel Atkins, a carter. Atkins rented the cottage out to a number of tenants after residing in the house himself from 1882 until 1886..Description:The house at 16 Bayswater Road is a single-storey, block-fronted Victorian cottage with a corrugated galvanised steel gable roof. The verandah has turned timber posts and cast iron decoration. The façade has a timber-framed double-hung sash window to one side of a timber door. The timber picket fence is recent.Significance:The house at 16 Bayswater Road, Kensington, is of local aesthetic and historic interest. The house is representative of the more modest housing which was erected in Kensington during the Boom of the 1880s. The house is intact and contributes to the nature of the surrounding streetscape, and relates visually to the adjacent No. 18.
