General notes:
Building type: FlatsPeriod; Date: Inter-War; 1938History: The building was constructed c.1937. It is first listed in the Sands & McDougall directory in 1928, when it is identified as Yarram Flats.Description: The building is a double-storey inter-War block of flats in a minimalist Moderne style. The walls are of rendered brick and the roof is concealed behind a plain parapet. Asymmetrically composed and cubic in form, the facade is dominated by a projecting stairwell with narrow, double-heigh windows, and has a deep, cantilevered balcony on the east side. The planter box and front fence/balustrade appear to be original. The building has undergone recent restoration, which appears to have included replacement of glazing. The front fence and gate, to the west of the building, are recent.Significance: Yarram Flats are of local historical and aesthetic importance. Historically, the building is demonstrative of residential development in South Yarra in the late inter-War period, a major period of flat development in the area. Aesthetically, the building is a particularly good and substantially intact example of a block of flats in a somewhat austere Moderne style, which contrasts with much of the Arts and Crafts-inspired development in the area.
