General notes:
Period: EdwardianConstruction date: c1911-1912History:The rate books indicate that a three-room timber cottage occupied the land at 2 Bayswater Road from the mid-1880s until the first decade of the twentieth century. In 1905, the cottage was valued at #12. The cottage was owned by Thomas Robb, a grocer, and was occupied by various tenants, including Henry Hall from 1897 to 1910. The Sands & McDougall directories show a change of occupant in 1913, suggesting that the cottage was demolished about 1911-1912 to make way for the existing house. The existing houses at 2 Bayswater Road was occupied by Fredrick Porter from 1913 until the 1940s..Description:The building at 2 Bayswater Road is a single-storey weatherboard Edwardian house with an L-shaped plan and a hipped and gabled corrugated galvanised steel roof. The verandah has turned timber posts and a timber fretwork frieze. Windows are timber-framed double-hung sashes; that to the gabled bay dates from the inter-War period and contains Art Deco leadlighting. The timber picket fence is not original..Significance:The house at 2 Bayswater Road, Kensington, is of local aesthetic and historic interest. The house is representative of the villas which were erected in Kensington during the early decades of the twentieth century. The house is intact and makes a contribution to the predominantly Edwardian nature of the surrounding streetscape.
