It’s up for sale for the first time in 50 years and has strong ties to Melbourne’s shirt-making heritage. The property was bought by Alexander and Margaret Peterfreund in 1963 for $115,000. Mr Peterfreund founded Phillips Shirts alongside friend Philip Phillips in 1953 after emigrating to Australia from Czechoslovakia after the war. Mr Peterfreund’s son Andrew Peterfreund and another person, Susan Moss of Caulfied, bought shares in the property in 1996 after Mr Peterfruend died.Andrew Peterfreund is the current managing director of Phillips Shirts, which still operates out of the Little Lonsdale premises. The property features a three and five-level warehouse and retail building comprising a ground floor showroom and Phillips Shirts’s clothing factory on the upper levels. The building is fully leased on a short-term basis.March 10, 2016 12:00amClaire Heaney, Herald Sun`IT’S one of Melbourne’s best kept secrets. In the middle of the city, tucked in one of Melbourne’s famous laneways, Phillips Shirts is a treasure trove of fabrics and shirts dating back to the 1970s.Founded in 1952, the Little Lonsdale St business continued to manufacture locally until 18 months ago.In recent years, it dabbled in homewares and womenswear in a bid to use its countless bolts of rare fabrics, many produced in now-closed European mills. Today, it sells its inventory along with shirts manufactured offshore. The next chapter will see Phillips Shirts moving from the city space, which it has occupied since 1958, to a new retail warehouse in Malvern.Phillips Shirts brand manager Amit Charan said in the meantime the focus was on lightening the inventory before the shift.“Phillips Shirts has developed a cult following. When we dug out the shirts that were in storage and started displaying them, people got really excited. You just don’t see this sort of vintage merchandise in shops,” he said. There are a series of regular sales to clear exclusive fabrics, shirts and knitwear. “It is a rare opportunity to see the contents of the building,” he said. The range includes dinner shirts from the 1970s through to sought-after Liberty prints.Phillips Shirts was founded by Alex Peterfreund and a friend, Philip Phillips.Mr Phillips was a boarder in the Peterfreund’s Windsor home and had been trained in made-to-measure shirtmaking in Paris. By day, the men held down jobs, and at night they cut shirts on the floor at home.Phillips Shirts has been called on to provide costumes for the recent two-part series Molly. It also provided shirts for productions such as Rock of Ages, Jersey Boys and 1970s-themed commercials.Alex Peterfreund’s son, Andrew, is managing director of Phillips Shirts.Mr Charan said they were keen to open the space for events in coming months.“We would love to hear from people looking to use the space to stage experimental music and fashion events.”In late February, a Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival event was staged at the venue.“It was great. It was the first fashion event and it showcased the artists with the factory/warehouse back-up,” he said. The next sale runs from next Tuesday until March 19.phillipsshirts.com.au.DIRECTORIES OF VICTORIA, MELBOURNE-SANDS AND KENNY, SANDS & MCDOUGALL1942Zevenboom la274-278 Zevenboom, Jno., & Co (mill & store)Sutherland stPeriod: Inter-War
