Grading as at 1985 : CPeriod : Mid Victorian (1882)Grantee : J Munro 1875___________________________GRAEME BUTLER 1983, CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNEGrading as at 1985 : CPeriod : Mid Victorian (1882)Grantee : J Munro 1875History- The building contractor of Errol Street, North Melbourne, James Thurgood constructed these row houses in 1882 as a rental proposition, then sold them in 1890 to John Flynn. The tenants were generally a transient population of small businessmen e.g. James Blinkhorn (printer), John McCallum (draper), Charles Hewett (butcher), Thomas White (jeweller), James Brimmer (coach trimmer), Henry Murphy (miller). Thurgood built a number of other premises in the area.Description- Transverse gable-roofed polychrome brick row houses with verandahs and iron picket fences; 75 being double-fronted, the rest single. Roofs are of slate and cast-iron friezes decorate the verandah: the overall simple effect being typical of the pre-boom period date. Notable features include fence, verandah decoration, verandah roof and structure, unpainted decorative brickwork, tiled verandahsIntegrity - Cast-iron frieze are gone from 69, as is the verandah.Streets cape - Occupying a block betvleen a Rm~ and Leveson Street, this terrace contributes prominently to the Courtney Street residential precinct.Significance- Architecturally, a near to original, well sited example of this oft-built form: of local importance. Historically, a speculative row, housing typical population types in North Melbourne, home occupations, artisans, and skilled workers: of local interest.Recommendations - Restore verandah of 69;repaint trim in original or typical colours.___________________________References:(RB= Rate book; D= Melbourne or Victoria Directory)1.
