General notes:
Grading as at 1985 : BPeriod : Early Victorian (1857)Grantee : H Jennings 1852The first owner of 1857, Edward Kyle, leased this house to William Lindsay until he, in turn, bought it in 1864. In two years, it was sold again to Mrs. Murray who owned it for the next twenty-five years. From 1872 she leased it to tenants such as Henry Shallis (sic) an upholsterer, John Taylor an engineer, and Rubing Gordon. About 1895, the house had a new owner, Martha Gill. It is possible that Henry Shallis listed in ratebooks is Henry Shalless, the prolific North Melbourne architect, given the semi-allied nature of the occupationsThis double-fronted timber duplex, with a common high, simple hip roof and wide boarding, is synonymous with early houses in the Colony and in particular, North Melbourne, given the absence of fire separation of occupations. Notable features include undivided pair - early form, wide boards.Architecturally, of high regional importance as a near original, early timber duplex which contravened the Melbourne Building Act, but exhibits the rare elements of imported wide softwood board cladding, the high hip roof synonymous with shingles and the proximity to the streets. The house is no longer a duplex, but one house. Historically, exemplifies the special role North Melbourne played in provision of many cheap houses for the increasing gold-brought population which began to inhabit the towns after the initial 'rush' : of high regional importance. The doorway to the right has since been removed.
