GRAEME BUTLER 1983, CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNEGrading as at 1985 : DPeriod : late Victorian (1885-1886)Grantee : J Madders 1865History - James Madders, who had been in the hotel trade, had these houses built in 1885-86, although it wasn't until 5 years later that he actually resided in 454 Dryburgh Street. Some of his tenants before 1895 included Sarah Allison, presumably of the ubiquitous family of North Melbourne undertakers; John Henry Fox, a civil servants and Samuel Norris, a currier, an occupation linked with North Melbourne's horse and racing pursuits. The name presumably derived from St. Michael's Catholic School, then in Arden Street, corner of Dryburgh.Description- A two-storey, parapetted and partly unpainted stuccoed brick row with a two-level cast-iron verandah and iron picket fence: a gabled entablature is placed centrally in the panelled and piered parapet.Integrity - Generally original.Streetscape - An isolated contributive row within the Dryburgh Street north residential precinct.Significance- Architecturally, it is a conservative, austere design of a much-used row house form-type and contributive to a precinct.Historically, a speculative development of local interest..Recommendations - Repaint in original or typical colours..References:(RB= Rate book; D= Melbourne or Victoria Directory)1.
