This building, originally numbered as 73 Queensberry Street, first appears in the rate books for 1878, described as a four-room brick shop and dwelling valued at £38. It was owned by Esther Armstrong, who also owned the adjacent shop at No. 71 (now 409 Queensberry Street), and was occupied by Maria Moran, a dressmaker. Around 1880, Moran was succeeded as tenant by William Canter, a grocer, who was still living there in the early 1890s. By 1900, the building was occupied by Dora Cahill, a dressmaker.It is a nineteenth century double-storey rendered brick house. The front elevation is built to the property line and is articulated by a string course between the two levels, and a moulded cornice and scrolled pediment with rendered console brackets to the parapet. The ground floor level has an entrance door with fanlight and a large non-original window opening containing two timber-framed double-hung sash windows. The first floor level has three evenly-spaced timber-framed double-hung sash windows with rendered sills.It is of local historical and aesthetic interest. It is a typical example of a shop and dwelling erected prior to the prosperous Boom period of the 1880s, and thus demonstrates a particular phase in the commercial development of the area. Aesthetically, the building is typical an Italianate shop and residence. There seems to have been a doorway on the left, now plastered over.
