Greer, of Greer and Ashburner, Little Collins-street, as one of three men with whom he had had a midnight encounter.Mr. Greer, who lives at 508 High-street, East Prahran, was awakened by a commotion in his fowl yard, and when he went outside found three men there. He seized one of them, and was engaged in a struggle with him, when Mr. W. Chambers, of South Yarra, who was riding past, heard him call for assistance.Mr. Chambers jumped off his horse and rushed into the yard, and seized one of the other two men, who had lingered to secure their mate's liberty. The two men who were secured, after a bold attempt to regain their liberty, during which Mr. Chambers's hand was severely injured, were handed over to the police. The arrest of Hogan followed, as related, and the detectives, while at the house in which he lived, came across his brother Frederick, who was wanted for the alleged larceny as a bailee of a bicycle from Mr. C. B. Follow, of Swanston-Street. He is stated to have hired the machine under an assumed name, and after detaining it for a considerable time to have sent it back to the owner.1916C. G. This firm was established in 1849 before the gold rushes and the separation of Victoria from New South Wales, the founders being James Greer and James Ashburner, whose sons are now carrying on the business.Wire work of a general description was done from the beginning, and when quartz mining succeeded the alluvial rushes, a big business was begun in battery grading. As one of the earliest Industries of Melbourne, Greer & Ashburner had the advantage of experience and grew in prestige with the progress of the city and the State, till the firm's customers now include the leading houses of Australia. The firm kept abreast of all Inventions and Improvements in the industry, and though so long established its tone is modern and progressive. Just lately it has undertaken special work for the lusty young radio Industry. Wire work of all descriptions, from fine-meshed weaves to sturdy chain netting is turned out in quantity and of the highest quality, in brass, copper stool and bronze.A full complement of machines Is Installed on the two floors of the works, and the firm is capable of handling special Jobs of the most Intricate kind. Among the products are wire guards for windows, lift enclosures, bank screens, analytical testing sieves, riddles, fly wire, fine springs for knitting factories, builders' screens, office blinds, sealing wire, ice chest trays electrically welded, Incubator trays, and radio valve holders.1930s, 1949EVANS & BALFOUR- Cutlery and Sporting Specialists 269 Little Collins St., Melb1954...It would be advisable to send it to a gunsmith.
