(keeping the bushmen from the drink)"Where ignorance is bliss, 'tis folly to be wise."To the Editor of the Argus....The " Bushman," Sir, is usually regarded as being devoid of all desire for mental cultivation ; whose sole aim is to eat, drink, and sleep ;squander his money in the public houses in town…With regard to what I have said respecting the theatre, I would observe that it has only recently come under the management of Messrs Young and King, therefore I allude to the complaints I have so frequently heard from bushmen up to that period, few of whom have been in Melbourne since it has passed into other hands. There is certainly a reading-room at the Mechanics' Hall, there is (or was a few days ago) apanorama, and Hore's Saxe Horn Band play once a-week in the long days on the Eastern Hill, but what of that ? Is it by such means that the bushman is to be lured from drink. No ! the remedymust come from the Publicans themselves…BENJAMIN FARRE..1852SAXE HORN BAND.J HORE returns his sincere thanks to the . inhabitants of Melbourne....1853The Argus (Melbourne, Vic. : 1848 - 1957)Monday 15 August 1853 - Page 4MARRIEDMary Jane eldest daughter of Mr. Hore, Master of the Saxehorn band, Melbourne, late of Shaldon, Devonshire, England....William, second son of Mr. John Marris, timber merchant, Melbourne, to Lauretta, second daughterMr. Joseph Hore, master of the Saxehorn band, SouthShaldon, Devon, England..1859THE Friends of the late Mr. JOSEPH PERCIVAL HORE, musician, are respectfully informed that his remains will be interred in the New Cemetery, and that the funeral will leave his late residence, Gore-street, off Greeves-street, Collingwood, at 3 o'clock….1955Advert.Commonwealth X-ray and Radium Laboratory, University ofMelbourne.
