(Leslie M Perrot & partners, arch'ts; E A Watts Ltd, bldrs; £643,182December 1957In Melb, the new offices of the Melb & Metrop Board of Works were occupied. The exterior was illustrated in C-S of Jan '56, when demolition on the site was proceeding. It stands firmly among the conservatives as a structure, near the fop for neatness & consistency Arch'ts L M Perrot & partners considered many alternatives before using in-situ encased steel, hollow-block floors & brick window spandrels. In Jan '55 they received these alternative tenders for the 12000 sq ft of floor construction: with open-web joists & gypsum ceilings, £10,365, with precast concrete slabs, £9,028, with hollow blocks as used, £8,200. At that time they found that curtain wall would add £48,000. The final total cost was £635,000 (£496 per square, 8 firs & 2 basements), including floor heating, mech vent & 3 lifts, but excluding partitions. The bldg is a plain rectangle 134 ft 8 ins by 190 ft, artificially lit to 35 ft-candles. (E A Watts Ltd, bldrs)
