It was a scene of great mercantile activity and a place where journeys began and ended. But before Europeans settled in the Port Phillip region the area of the future Victoria Docks was on the edge of a large wetland that was habitat for an enormous range of birdlife and aquatic plants. In late spring and summer local Aboriginal clans arrived to exploit the rich resources the area provided. In the wake of the rapid development of Melbourne, the Docklands area was put to a number of uses, and has changed in function and form, in line with the continuing evolution of the city. Join archaeologist and historian Dr Gary Presland on a walk around the Docklands precinct, as he relates the environmental and human history of the area.MEET LIBRARY AT THE DOCKWednesday 25 May, 11am to 12.30pm
