General notes:
Period; Date: Edwardian; c. 1891History: ...constructed by builder James Craigen for Charles Emmerton in 1891, to a design by noted Melbourne architect, Anketell M Henderson. The rate books show that Emmerton continued as owner until at least 1916, by which time the building was described as a sixteen-room brick house... Critchley Parker had become owner by 1936... and was occupied by Henry Searby.Anketell Henderson, born in 1853 and arriving in Australia from England in 1863, set up his own practice as an architect in Collins Street in 1890. Anketell was keenly involved in the Melbourne architectural community, lecturing in architecture at Melbourne University between 1905 and 1916, and elected president of the Royal Victorian Institute of Architects in 1897, 1910 and 1913. Kingsley Henderson joined his father in practice in 1906, when the firm became known as Anketell and K Henderson.Description: Wavendon is a substantial double-storey Victorian Gothic revival style mansion, asymmetrically planned and with sstepply pitched gabled roofs. Walls, originally of face brick, have been rendered. Windows are timber-framed double-hung sashes with pointed arched heads; timber shutters are probably a later addition. The chimneys are of brick with corbelled cappings, now painted. The house is sited on a relatively large block; the original bluestone and brick front fence remains, also rendered relatively recently.Significance: Wavendon... is of metropolitan aesthetic and historical significance. Historically, the house is one of the few remaining nineteenth century mansions in this part of South Yarra, and as such demonstrates the desirability of the suburb as a prestigious residential area for Melbourne's wealthy. Designed by noted Melbourne architect Anketell Henderson, the house is a good example of the late nineteenth century Gothic Revival style, unfortunately marred by the non-original rendered finish.Additional notes:Charles Emmerton's estate in Buckinghamshire was called Wavendon. He emigrated to Australia in 1845 with his wife and their child Harry. Harry married Alice Mabel Maud Balcombe, the daughter of Alexander Beatson Balcombe. Their daughter Mabel married the tennis player Norman Brookes.https://oa.anu.edu.au/obituary/emmerton-harry-sam-16319https://oa.anu.edu.au/obituary/emmerton-alice-mabel-16318
