General notes:
Grading as at 1985 : CPeriod : Mid Victorian (1880-1881)Grantee : G Evans 1852National Trust File 2916Soon after their construction for James Wilkinson in 1880, one of these shops and residences became associated with the wine trade. For the first 15 years, 422 was leased to wine merchants Felix Brubeck (1881) and Stephen Salagari (1885). Until 1895, 420 was occupied by Thomas Widdecombe, an ironmonger, and Peter Alexander (an engineer).Two-storey parapetted and stuccoed brick shops and residences with a trabeated and part arcuated facade. Ornament consists of smooth rustication of the pilasters, protruding window bays with segment-arched single or grouped openings decorated with sub-sill panelling and drip-moulds which terminate on bosses, and deep bracketting to both the parapet cornice and to buttresses which overlap the string-mould at the splayed corner. The design appears disproportionate and may have been truncated at the parapet: insufficient depth having been given to the main entablature. These shops once possessed a street verandah, with a splayed corner, which occupied all of the south and part of the east façade.Architecturally, although near original, the design appears to be a clumsy and disproportionate disposition of openings and elements at the upper level, disguised by rich ornament; it is a major corner building in the streetscape: of regional importance. Historically, of interest as a, for a time, branch of one of the traditional businesses of the area, wine distribution and a recognisable use-form type: of local importance.Associated with furniture shop, Franco Cozzo, it has been more recently the home of vinyl shop, Heartland Records
