Grading as at 1985 : APeriod : Early Victorian (1858-1859)Grantee : C O'Brien 1852Cornelius O'Brien and his family owned these houses for approximately 30 years after they were built in 1859. Ellen O'Brien, his wife, also occupied 147 Chetwynd Street after 1869. One of their earliest tenants was George Evans, who was Town Clerk of Hotham municipality at the time. (Refer to 17 Chapman Street). Other tenants included such people as James Hembridge, James Foxhall, Henry Howson, John Daly (a blacksmith), John and Eliza Topp. Towards the end of the century, the houses were part of a deceased estate (Pearson) and leased to Edward Webb, a baker)A two-storey, stuccoed brick row of two houses with a simple corniced parapet and transverse gable roof line. A string-mould separates the upper, simply fenestrated facade from the finely proportioned Corinthian Order arcade at the lower level. An iron picket fence is placed between the arcade columns whilst fine hood-moulds follow each arch to a boss at either end. Notable features include fine arcade, fence, verandah roof and structure.Architecturally, a very early, original row houses of this arcaded form, of state significance. Historically, the residence of some notable inhabitants of North Melbourne, George Evans and the Topps.
