RESEARCH ADDED BY GRAEME BUTLER 2022:__________________________________________________DATE: 1885-1890?, rebuilt c1905;ASSOCIATIONS: Fisher BrothersSigns 1984: Sam Bear - bushwalking, camping, disposals ,outdoor clothing & foot ware, jeans, jackets, shirts, belts, boots; work clothing by Yakka.GRAEME BUTLER 1989, LITTLE BOURKE STREET PRECINCT CONSERVATION STUDYShop 225-229 Russell StreetHistoryBuilt: c1885-90, rebuilt c1905?Samuel Bear, the best known occupier of these shops today, was leasing the shop from c1934 while others leased the store at the rear from Ethel May Fisher. Before her, Euphemia Cameron of Glen Iris was the owner and the Fisher Brothers (mirror manufacturers),long term occupiers from c1905 During that time it was a brick shop and shed, sometimes two brick shops and a shed or workshops. Around the 1890s, it was a brick and wooden shop with 5 rooms, the valuation increasing almost 100% between 1885 and 1890.7 This was during Mrs. McLean's ownership. A Mrs. McDonald was another female owner who had a brick and iron shop on the site in 1875 but prior to that, its form is uncertain. Little has been done to the building since the First War except alterations and additions in 1928.9DescriptionSigns, paint colours and awnings obscure the front of this building but its tripartite construction is evident with vermiculated blocks at 229 and at either end of the shops. In c1906 it was shown with large showcases either side of the entrance.Shopfront details (sills) appear old except perhaps for introduced transoms and top lights but the central entry and side lights appear Edwardian or later. 10 A gable apex is visible behind the parapet and street verandah fixings are evident.External IntegritySigns are intrusive, obscuring the building's form, the awnings are new but sympathetically formed and the later shopfront details are related to the surmised construction date.Streetscape:A small part of a cohesive 19th and early 20th century commercial streetscape.SignificancePotential value as an early part of the precinct, possessing valuable shopfront details, albeit from mixed periods. Also part of a cohesive 19th and early 20th century commercial streetscape and pursuing a use carried out at the site over 100 years ago.Contributes to precinct.GRAEME BUTLER 1985 MELBOURNE CENTRAL ACTIVITIES DISTRICT CONSERVATION STUDYBUILDING IDENTIFICATION FORM_________________________________________GRAEME BUTLER 1989, LITTLE BOURKE STREET PRECINCT CONSERVATION STUDYBUILDING IDENTIFICATION SHEETsee 1989 Chinatown images_________________________________________VICTORIAN HERITAGE INVENTORY H7822-1343Fels, M., Lavelle, S. & Mider, D., Melbourne Central Activities District: Archaeological Management Plan (8 volumes), OCC.
