Raphael (of 1 George Street, Fitzroy), applied to build in January, 1884.Mahlstedt's 1887 plan shows four two-storey brick buildings on this site with Henry Raphael as owner and a multitude of occupiers and occupations. Yoeman's Laboratory, J. Abraham's boot factory, Kiteley & Co. japanners the Victorian Skittle Saloon, Kong Goon and John Selman, cabinetmakers, were among them. 6Mahlstedt's 1906 plan shows a similar set of buildings, occupied by 'Chinese' and numbered 14-20. Around this period Joseph Raphael (executor of Henry) owned the four workshops and a store at the rear. He also owned two buildings nearly opposite. 7 C.S. Raphael was the new owner by 1917 and Elias Raphael by 1926. Alterations were made to the building in 1920 (£2000 factory') and 1925 (including a shopfront) 8.DescriptionDepicted in 1906 as typically having a central door and flanking windows in each unit, the present row shows little of this with three silled ground- level window openings providing a clue to the original elevation. The upstairs level appears to have been completely replaced although a steep stair night ascending from one ground floor opening appears old.External IntegrityGeneral opening alteration, new stuccoing and first storey replacement.StreetscapeOnly scale siting fenestration and materials (part) link this row with the precinct's character.SignificanceMuch altered, with little historical expression externally..GRAEME BUTLER 1985 MELBOURNE CENTRAL ACTIVITIES DISTRICT CONSERVATION STUDYBUILDING IDENTIFICATION FORM__________________________________________________VICTORIAN HERITAGE INVENTORY H7822-1536Four two-storey brick buildings (shops) built for Henry Raphael in 1884.
