General notes:
Grading as at 1985 : DPeriod : Mid Victorian (1891-1892)Grantee : Allison and Knight 1852In 1891-92, William Kemp, a commission agent, had these premises built as rental propositions. For the next 3 or 4 years at least, he owned and leased them to various tradesmen and professionals e.g. Frederick Maine, an agent, Charles Jones, an undertaker and Charles Nathan, a clothier.A two-storeyed, stuccoed brick shop and residence trio with balustrading and a central segment arched entablature to the parapetted roof line and a secondary entablature to each shop. Timber shop fronts over stuccoed stall boards appear to have been the original ground level form (424). Other decorative elements include pronounced pilasters, keystoned architraves, cornice and string-moulds and orbs to the parapet piers.Architecturally, relatively original shops and residences, in a by then common architectural mode, but with a major streetscape role: of high local importance. Historically, no identifiable personality is associated with this building and historically, it is of local interest as an example of a 19th century commercial building type.
