DERIVED FROM GRAEME BUTLER 1983, CONSERVATION STUDY FOR THE CITY OF MELBOURNE OF NORTH AND WEST MELBOURNEGrading as at 1991 : CPeriod : Edwardian-era, 1901History- 1901 was the date of construction of these row houses for Alfred Travis and by 1905 they were owned by John Travis, whose house adjoined to the north. During those years, the tenants were from a variety of occupations although there were at least three clerks, a Mr White, Alfred James Morris and George Tootle.Description- They are single-storey, parapetted row houses of face coloured brick, with iron decorated, convex-roof verandahs, iron balustrades, and iron picket fences/handrails. Presumably due to the road cutting, these houses are raised on brick podiums and need longitudinal stairways from the street. The parapet entablatures are arched, (with shells) and scrolls, but other than the cornice moulding, little other stucco decoration is used.Significance- Architecturally, they are late examples of an uncommon and distinctive form of row house, with mixed integrity, but all contributing to a similarly elevated streetscape.
