General notes:
Grading as at 1985 : CPeriod : Early Victorian (1866)Grantee : J Gemmell 1852Built in 1866, this shop and residence was owned by Alexander Georgeson from then until after 1890. Christopher Tully, a draper, later of Errol Street, was his first tenant and he was followed by a bootmaker, James Murphy and a series of pawnbrokers such as Michael and Stewart Crawcour. Georgeson also owned the adjoining Volunteer Arms Hotel (372); being noted in ratebooks of 1894-5 as ..'Master in Lunacy', from whence the ownership went to the Perpetual Executors. (Mr Georgeson died in the Kew Asylum)A two-level basalt masonry shop and residence with quoined openings and a simply corniced parapet. Pilasters flank the former shop front. Notable features include stone details.Architecturally, built of an uncommon material (basalt) for small commercial premises thus, in this way, representing clearly its early construction date. Historically, perhaps the first of Georgeson's developments at this corner of which this and the former hotel and shop remain: of local importance.
