Grant, of "Quamby," Sorrento, has presented the Presbyterian Church with a new Thomas Canadian reed organ. Members of the Church of England and residents of Sorrento combined to give a complimentary social to Rev. Frank Thornton, vicar of the Church of England, who has been transferred to Yarram. There was a large attendance. The vicar was presented with a wallet of notes and a combination ink stand of Australian blackwood. Rev. Mr. Harvey is taking charge of the parish. Mrs Ellen Grant, who died at her home, Quamby, Sorrento, on June 15, aged 94, was the widow of the late Mr George Alexander Grant. She was a consistent supporter of local national and war charities for many years, and had been in the habit of donating a large sum to Christmas charities through The Argus every year.The Argus (Melbourne, Vic. : 1848 - 1957) Fri 30 Aug 1946 Page 5 Large Bequests To Charity`Large Bequests To Charity £133,516 WillCharities will take the bulk of the £133,516 estate left by the late Mrs Ellen Grant, formerly of Vale st, East Melbourne, and Buckley st, Essendon, and late of Quamby, Sorrento, widow. The major portion of the estate will not be subject to death duties because it is for charitable institutions. The estate comprises £ 13,610 realty and £119,906 personalty (gross).Largest bequest in the will and five codicils is £17,787 to the Presbyterian Church of Victoria Trust Corporation- to form an endowment fund. In addition, the corporation receives real estate valued £1,600 and furniture worth £207, and £8,893 is to be divided equally between the Presbyterian Women's Missionary Union, the Foreign Mission Fund, the Home Mission Fund, and the Girls' Hostel, Abbotsford. Bequests of £8,393 each go to the Children's, Royal Melbourne, Austin, Queen Victoria, Women's, Eye and Ear, and Alfred hospitals. The following institutions each receive £4,446 from the estate: Melbourne Ladies* Benevolent Society, Melbourne City Mission, City Newsboys'' Society, Melbourne Orphan Asylum, Lost Dogs' Home, North Melbourne; Victorian Society for the Protection of Animals, and the Victorian Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. Personal legacies include £1,000 cash each to Stella Dow (niece) and Violet Satchell (niece). The Presbyterian Church, Sorrento, is to receive a legacy of £ 1,000 in cash. Mrs Grant died on June 15, 1946, and her last will was dated November 12, 1931.
