Originally it ran directly through to La Trobe Street, but today it doglegs to the west, connecting with Exploration Lane. The lane has been primarily used for commercial purposes, although the nature of these have changed over the years. In 1860, Evans Lane was home to baker and grocer Thomas H. Miers. It was also the location of government and administration buildings at numbers 1-5, which are now part of the Heritage Inventory. In 1914 a report was made to the Police Department by Chinese residents of Bennetts Lane regarding a group of 'undesirable persons...in the habit of congregating' in Evans Lane, Bennetts Lane and Exploration Lane. A request was made for additional lighting to prevent future robberies and assaults, and to create a safer environment for the lane's inhabitants.ALEXANDRA GERNERREFERENCESSands & McDougall’s commercial and general Melbourne directory, Sands & McDougall, Melbourne, 1892. HEART OF THE CITY. No. 1.`….There is another class of building which is common in many of the alleys and on the odd shreds and patches of ground which have been utilised for the erection of shameful apologies for houses That is the two storied dwelling. It is built generally on a block of ground about 100 square and opens, perhaps, on a tiny open plot shared by three or four neighbouring houses Its vi hole height barely exceeds that of a decent single story villa The two boxes vi Inch form its upstairs room and its down stairs room are low roofed and ill ventilated you may climb the perilously steep and narrow staircase in the corner to find two men sleeping in the attic, which can hold little more than their bunksTo describe the buildings in the various localities would be mere repetition.
