Grading as at 1985 : CPeriod : Mid Victorian (1878)Grantee : R B Chomley 1852These shops and residences were occupied by grocers, bootmakers and bakers. One grocer, George Carter leased 472 Victoria Street from its construction in 1878, until after 1890. The bootmakers in 470 were William Tulloch and William Lang. This building was enlarged about 1890 then leased to Michael O'Keefe, a baker. There was only one owner during this time, a Mr. Donald, who may have been an auctioneer of Elgin Street, Carlton or George or Sam Donald (Refer 293-5 Victoria Street).A two-storey, stuccoed brick shop and residence pair with an ornately decorated parapet roof line and façade (presumably of the c1890 renovation, a transverse-gable roof line behind the parapet). Decorative elements include the swans-neck, gabled pediments and scrolls atop an arcaded and piered parapet, which shows the Northern European Baroque influence, and an elaborate Venetian window motif (Serlian) which is placed on stencilled and panelled piers, with a heavy bracketted arched pediment above.Architecturally, constructed in a common form but in near original condition above the verandah and exhibiting unusually ornate detailing from the little-used source of the Northern European Baroque: of regional importance. Historically, of local interest as an example of a 19th century commercial building type.Adjoining the massive 464-6 Victoria Street, it shares similarly ornate stucco work and a graduation of the scale: contributes to the Victoria Street commercial streetscape.
